Gingerbread Men

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening solid
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 3 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup molasses dark
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg


    1. The day before baking the cookies, prepare the dough: In a mixing bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add all remaining ingredients and mix well. Cover bowl and refrigerate overnight.
    2. The next day, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Place a clean cloth on a table or counter and sprinkle lightly with flour. Turn out dough onto cloth and roll out to 1/4 inch thickness. Using a floured cookie cutter, cut dough into desired shapes. Add decorations, if desired. Place cookies on an ungreased baking sheet.
    3. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
